Government Seizes Private Property For Memorial

The government is well known for its belief that your land is their land if they want it and they will take it from you if you dare not to give it to them. Now the government has opened a new chapter in eminent domain abuse by condemning land which they want for a memorial to the victims of Flight 93 and then seizing it because to date they had been unable to acquire the land from the legal land owners. While the government condemning land as an excuse to seize it is not new, the fact that they are seizing it to build a memorial where a tragic event took place does set a dangerous new precedent in my opinion.

PITTSBURGH — The government will begin taking land from seven property owners so that the Flight 93 memorial can be built in time for the 10th anniversary of the 2001 terrorist attacks, the National Park Service said.

In a a statement obtained by The Associated Press, the park service said it had teamed up with a group representing the victims’ families to work with landowners since before 2005 to acquire the land.

The seven property owners own about 500 acres still needed for what will ultimately be a $58 million, 2,200-acre permanent memorial and national park at the crash site near Shanksville, about 60 miles southeast of Pittsburgh.

“We always prefer to get that land from a willing seller. And sometimes you can just not come to an agreement on certain things,” park service spokesman Phil Sheridan said.

So now the families of the victims of the September 11th attacks are also complicit in seizing land and essentially stealing it from its rightful owners? Shame on each of you involved in this travesty. Especially considering that as usual it seems the government has once again jumped the gun and acted because they decided that the “negotiations have been unsuccessful.”
